The summer of 2020 has most likely broken all records of numbers of beaches-goers and boat traffic in Higgins Lake. While we all love the hazy lazy crazy days of summer, this rush to the lakes is keeping the Sheriff Marine Patrol busy. North State Park Manager, Josh Pellow reports that there were 375 vehicles entered the North State Park on July 3, 2020.
The Sheriff’s Marine Patrol has had help from the Community this summer to maximize coverage on weekends and evenings. Vicki Springstead, Chair of the Higgins Lake Foundation presented a $5,000 donation to Sheriff Stern on Friday, August 07. This generous donation was made by an anonymous donor to help keep boaters safe on Higgins Lake. The Higgins Lake Foundation also made a $4,695 donation this spring.
Sheriff Ed Stern said, “because we have seen a significant increase in boat traffic, we would like to hire and train additional staff for the Marine Patrol. Those officers are also used in the winter for coverage out on the ice. Applications can be picked up here or found online in the Roscommon County website.” Roscommon County Sheriff Office is located at 111 South Second Street, in the Village of Roscommon.
