The Higgins Lake Foundation and the Marguerite Gahagan Nature Preserve share in the mission to promote interest in and preservation of the environment through educational programs. The Marguerite Gahagan Nature Preserve recently added the Higgins Lake Foundation to the Honor Roll plaque on permanent display at the Preserve.
Last summer Gahagan Executive Director, Tracy Bosworth, attended the Michigan Lakes and Streams Leadership Institute. A grant funded through HLF by the Roswell Burrows Environmental Scholarship Fund provided the enrollment fee. Tracy chose to create an Environmental Learning for the Future (ELF) program as her project. The program, based on invasive species, will impact many students in our community and may even be the start of a science career for some. Ongoing educational presentations, summer camps and outreach programs hosted by the Nature Preserve will also make good use of a video microscope that was funded by a grant from the Higgins Lake Foundation.
The Foundation also partners with Tracy Bosworth and Education Director, Tom Dale, who volunteer at the annual Lake Saver Day for RAPS fourth graders and the Higgins Lake Awareness Day youth picnic where their presentations make learning about the lake and science fun.
